Ghana Socialist Movement Condemns Charges Against Eswatini Activist

18.04.2026

The Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG) has strongly condemned what it describes as “fabricated criminal charges” against Eswatini pro-democracy activist Nontsetselelo Ncamsile Nkambule, calling for her immediate exoneration and broader international action.

In a statement dated April 16, 2026, the Accra-based movement accused the Royal Eswatini Police Service of issuing a politically motivated “Wanted” notice against Nkambule, who serves as Treasurer General of the Swaziland Youth Congress (SWAYOCO–PYL) and is affiliated with the People’s United Democratic Movement (PUDEMO).

According to the SMG, allegations of kidnapping and attempted murder leveled against Nkambule are unfounded and part of a broader crackdown on pro-democracy activism. The group maintains that she is being targeted for her political activities rather than any criminal wrongdoing.

Pattern of Alleged Repression

The statement situates the charges within a wider pattern of repression under the rule of Mswati III. It references several incidents, including:

  • The killing of protesters during pro-democracy demonstrations in 2021
  • The reported abduction and assault of Nkambule in 2022
  • The killing of human rights lawyer Thulani Maseko in 2023
  • The poisoning of PUDEMO president Mlungisi Makhanya in exile in 2024
  • The imprisonment of opposition figure Mduduzi Bacede Mabuza

The SMG also criticized the continued enforcement of a 1973 royal decree banning political parties, describing it as incompatible with democratic governance.

Timing and Political Context

The group argues that the charges come amid heightened political tensions ahead of celebrations marking King Mswati III’s 40 years on the throne, scheduled for April 24, 2026. It claims that security measures are being used to suppress dissent and prevent protests during this period.

Calls for Action

The SMG called on the Government of Ghana, the African Union, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the Government of South Africa to take action in defence of democratic rights in Eswatini. It also urged trade unions, civil society organisations, and individuals across Africa to support the #HandsOffOurTG campaign.

Background

Eswatini remains Africa’s last absolute monarchy, where political parties are banned and pro-democracy movements have long faced restrictions. The SMG states that recent developments reflect increasing pressure on the political system.
