The Pan-African Progressive Front (PPF) has issued a solidarity message to the Swaziland Liberation Movement (SWALIMO) ahead of its National Policy and Elective Conference, describing the gathering as a significant moment in the political struggle in Eswatini.
In a letter addressed to SWALIMO Deputy Secretary-General Comrade Khethukuthula B. Methula, we commend the movement for convening a democratic conference in a political environment where party activity remains restricted.
This conference takes place at a time of sustained political tension in Eswatini. The continued detention of pro-democracy figures and the unresolved aftermath of the 2021 protests underline the conditions under which SWALIMO is organising. In this context, the ability to convene such a gathering represents both an act of resistance and a step toward governance.
We recognise SWALIMO’s emphasis on internal democracy, policy development and organisational discipline as essential to long-term state-building. Across the continent, the experience of liberation movements has shown that preparation for governance is as critical as mobilisation itself.
We situate the Swazi struggle within a broader continental context. The political and economic structures under contest in Eswatini reflect patterns seen across multiple African states. This makes coordination among progressive movements necessary, through shared platforms, joint advocacy and collective engagement with regional and international institutions.
We emphasise the importance of unity among progressive forces. Fragmentation weakens liberation efforts and creates openings for external and internal pressures that undermine democratic change.
The PPF commits to continued practical solidarity with SWALIMO. This includes coordinated advocacy and sustained engagement at forums such as the African Union and other regional platforms where the question of Eswatini must be consistently raised.
We encourage all conference delegates to approach their deliberations with clarity and discipline. Leadership selection and policy direction at this stage will shape the movement's trajectory in the period ahead.
The PPF expresses confidence that meaningful political change in Eswatini will be driven by sustained organisation, principled leadership and collective action.
