There are events you hear about after the fact, and there are events you show up for because you already know, somewhere in you, that this is where your generation's argument is being made. On Saturday, September 5th, 2026, in the ISSER Conference Hall at the University of Ghana, that argument will be made out loud, by young Africans, for young Africans.
For too long, the question of Africa's debt has been discussed in rooms Africans are not invited into, in language designed to make an extractive system sound like arithmetic. The upcoming Youth Forum on Debt and Reparations exists to break that silence: to name colonial debt, the CFA Franc, the US dollar and the global financial architecture built to keep African wealth flowing outward, for exactly what they are. This is not a forum where youth are spoken about. It is a forum where youth speak. Whether you are a student in Accra, Bamako, Ouagadougou, Niamey, Lagos, or in the diaspora watching from abroad, the debt crisis and the reparations struggle are not distant policy matters happening to someone else. They shape the currency in your pocket, the price of what you eat, and the terms your government must accept to borrow money it should never have needed to borrow. The Forum will bring together youth from the Alliance of Sahel States, other African and international students, and Ghanaian youth, in one hall, around one cause. Several high-ranking dignitaries are expected to grace the occasion, alongside respected voices from across Ghana's civil society and the wider pan-Africanist movement. This is a rare gathering of the continent's next generation of leaders, organisers, and thinkers, and a rare chance to be counted among them. The day is built around three sessions with no patience for theory without practice: what young people can concretely do to advance the reparations cause; grassroots tools such as flashmob demonstrations and micro-legal claims for pursuing reparations from below; and a clear-eyed reckoning with the global debt trap and what genuine cancellation would demand. Africa's youth have inherited a continent still paying, in debt and in silence, for a history it did not choose.
