Ghana Socialist Movement Condemns U.S.–Israel Actions Against Iran

18.04.2026

The Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG) has issued a strong condemnation of what it describes as “U.S.–Israeli aggression” against Iran, calling for an immediate and permanent end to hostilities and renewed diplomatic efforts.

In a statement dated April 13, 2026, the Accra-based group argued that continued conflict risks further loss of life and destruction, insisting that peace efforts must be sustained despite setbacks in negotiations.

Allegations of War and Civilian Impact

The SMG claims that coordinated airstrikes by the United States and Israel began on February 28, 2026, targeting a range of locations in Iran, including military sites, government facilities, and civilian infrastructure.

According to the statement, the human toll has been severe, with thousands of casualties reported and significant damage to infrastructure such as hospitals, universities, transport systems, and residential areas. The group further alleges that some of these actions may constitute violations of international humanitarian law.

Regional Escalation

The SMG also raised concern about the extension of hostilities beyond Iran, citing continued Israeli military operations in Lebanon despite a declared ceasefire. It claims that large-scale airstrikes have resulted in civilian deaths and further destabilisation in the region.

Criticism of Shifting War Objectives

The statement argues that the stated goals of the conflict have shifted over time—from regime change to security concerns and resource control—suggesting, in the SMG’s view, broader geopolitical and economic motivations behind the war.

Calls for Immediate Action

The SMG outlined several demands, including:

  • A permanent end to the war and consolidation of the current ceasefire
  • An end to military operations in Lebanon and withdrawal of foreign forces
  • Full respect for international law, including the United Nations Charter and humanitarian conventions
  • Global commitment to nuclear disarmament
  • Reallocation of military spending toward social and economic development

The movement emphasized that resources used for warfare could instead support healthcare, education, housing, and food security worldwide.

Appeal for Global Solidarity

The SMG expressed solidarity with the peoples of Iran and Lebanon and called on governments, civil society organisations, and trade unions—particularly across Africa and the Global South—to advocate for peace and adherence to international law.
