Pan-African Progressive Front Calls for Renewed Struggle on Ghana’s Independence Day

06.03.2026

Accra, 6 March 2026 — The Pan-African Progressive Front has issued a strong Independence Day message calling on the people of Ghana and Africans everywhere to renew the struggle for genuine liberation, economic justice, and continental unity.

Commemorating the historic events of 6 March 1957, when Ghana became the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to win independence from British colonial rule, the organisation reflects on the revolutionary significance of that moment and the unfinished tasks of African liberation.

The Front recalls the historic leadership of Kwame Nkrumah, whose vision extended beyond national independence to the total emancipation and unity of the African continent. Nkrumah famously declared that the independence of Ghana would have meaning only if it was connected to the liberation of all Africa—a principle that continues to inspire Pan-African movements today.

In its message, the organisation argues that while colonial administrations were formally dismantled, many of the economic structures that sustained exploitation remain in place. It stresses that political sovereignty alone cannot guarantee true freedom if African nations remain dependent on external powers for finance, technology, and control over their natural resources.

According to the Front, the anniversary of Ghana’s independence should therefore serve not only as a moment of celebration but also as a reminder of the historic mission inherited from the liberation generation: building a united, self-reliant, and socially just Africa.

The statement calls on progressive forces, workers, youth movements, and Pan-African organisations across the continent and in the diaspora to continue advancing the ideals of sovereignty, solidarity, and collective development that defined the early anti-colonial struggles.

The full Independence Day message has been published in English and French to ensure accessibility across Africa and the global diaspora.
